Interior Minister assures Members of Parliament of security.
14-10-2020The Minister for Interior today addressed members of the press about measures put in place to protect the Members of Parliament following the gruesome murder of the Mfantseman MP.
He noted that the security of the Members of Parliament have always been the principle, stating that from 1992, the Parliamentary Protection Unit of the Police was established in the Parliament House. He further stated that the overall protection of Members is part of the general national security architecture. He however admitted that these strategies are limited. He added, that the retooling of the security agencies supported by Parliament, instituted and led by the President have made more security personnel available.
Consequently, from now to the end of the year an additional 200 police personnel will be added to the Parliamentary Protection Unit, making it attain the status of a Divisional Police command. These personnel will take care of the Members of Parliament as body guards. These 200 will not constitute the already existing security for Ministers, Deputy Ministers and the Leadership of the House. Ideally 800 police personnel are to be added to enable each Member have day and night residential security as well. Political actors will also be protected by the regional and divisional police.
The Minister finally stated that investigation are going to to find the killers of the Mfantseman Member of Parliament, Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford and his driver. So far, no arrest has been made in connection with the murders.
