Hon. Ignatius Awuah

The Minster for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Awuah says his Ministry has made plans to commence a process to develop a comprehensive Labour Migration Policy to secure decent work for migrants in both countries of origin and destination.

The Ministry will collaborate with Development partners and relevant stakeholders to commence the process. The Member of Parliament for Keta Richard Mawuli Kwaku Quashigah Awuah sought to know whether the Ministry is aware that some Ghanaians are working in the Gulf region as domestic workers.

Hon. Ignatius Awuah revealed that his Ministry is aware of the presence of Ghanaians working in the Gulf regions as domestic workers. He however added that it is difficult to know the total number of these Ghanaian domestic workers.

According to the Minister, there was a widespread number of freelance employment agents who facilitate irregular migration of people thereby increasing the number of domestic workers in the Gulf region.

He assured the House that Ghana has ratified the international instruments addressing labour migration and the protection of migrant workers through the International Labour Organization (ILO), Migration for Employment Convention etc.
