The First Deputy Speaker , Bernard Ahiafor today hosted the Ambassador of Peru for a pivotal meeting aimed at deepening the longstanding diplomatic relations between Ghana and Peru. The discussions centred on enhancing parliamentary, economic, and agricultural cooperation. The First Deputy Speaker expressed profound gratitude to the people of Peru for including Ghana’s Parliament in the celebration of Peru’s 205th Independence Anniversary, commending them on this significant milestone. A key outcome of the meeting was the proposal to establish a Parliamentary Friendship Association between the Parliament of Ghana and its Peruvian counterpart. The First Deputy Speaker assured the Ambassador that steps will be taken to formalise this association to promote greater legislative dialogue and exchange. The meeting explored collaboration in technology transfer, mining expertise, and agricultural knowledge exchange specifically highlighting opportunities for Ghana to learn from Peru’s experience in fish farming, cocoa value addition, and promoting cocoa consumption. The meeting also tackled pressing regulatory issues, including the challenges of illegal mining (galamsey). Peru shared its experience in strengthening regulatory systems, while the First Deputy Speaker emphasised Ghana’s commitment to licensing small-scale miners and formalising their operations. The discussions concluded with a mutual interest in international collaboration to combat illegal mining and a shared openness to investment in Ghana’s cocoa sector, paving the way for a future of enhanced bilateral cooperation.
