The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has presented the Democracy Cup to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, as part of Parliament’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and promote democratic values through sports. The presentation also served as an official invitation to the Chief of the Defence Staff to witness the much-anticipated Democracy Cup match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday, August 28, 2026. The Clerk said the initiative was intended to foster a healthy relationship between Parliament, the Ghana Armed Forces and the people of Ghana, while seeking the support of the Armed Forces in ensuring effective security before, during and after the match. Receiving the trophy, Lieutenant General William Agyapong pledged the Ghana Armed Forces’ full support to ensure a safe and successful event. He noted that Parliament’s presentation of the trophy to the Armed Forces demonstrated the respect and appreciation Parliament has for the institution and its contribution to national development and stability. The Democracy Cup, initiated under the leadership of the Speaker, forms part of Parliament’s efforts to use sports as a platform to promote national unity, strengthen institutional partnerships and highlight the importance of democratic governance. Ahead of Friday’s match, the trophy will tour key state institutions and offices as Parliament builds momentum towards the historic encounter.
