SAND WINNING AND FISH FARMING ACTIVITIES AFFECTING RAW WATER QUALITY IN ANLO CONSTITUENCY- MINISTER
29-11-2017Hon. Kofi Adda
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. Kofi Adda says the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) which was constructed in 1998 has an inbuilt clarifier that was designed to treat raw water at specific turbidity levels at Agordomi, has been serving its purpose until recently when the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) noticed that the turbidity level of raw water had increased, as a result of the negative effect of human activities such as sand winning and fish farming activities upstream close to the banks of the Volta River.
The Minister was answering a question by Hon. Clement Kofi Humado the Member of Parliament for Anlo constituency, on what plans are in place to construct a water treatment clarifier to improve water quality and delivery at the Ghana Water Treatment Plant at Agordomi that supplies drinking water to the Anlo constituency.
The Minister called on the Members of Parliament to assist in addressing the issue and that his Ministry will work with other stakeholder organizations such as; the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Traditional Authorities and the District Assembly to embark on a campaign effort to educate the fishing folks on sustainable fishing techniques and to also clamp down on sand winning activities in the area, as this can improve the quality of water for Anlo constituency
