The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, served as Special Guest of Honour at the launch of “Rebuilding Confidence, Restoring Strength,” the autobiography of Chief Dr. Doli-Wura Awushi Abdul-Malik Seidu Zakaria, whose leadership is credited with reviving the National Investment Bank (NIB). The event drew members of the Council of State, Ministers, MP’s, Rep. of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, traditional leaders, and business and media figures. In his remarks, Bagbin praised Zakaria’s record steering several state institutions, including the West Gonja District Assembly, the Land Title Registry, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, before taking on the challenge of NIB, a bank many doubted could be saved by someone without a banking background. Bagbin used the occasion to highlight troubling gaps in state institutional governance, noting that NIB — established by Parliament in 1963 as Ghana’s first development finance institution and once a financier of major businesses including Nestlé Ghana and Aluworks had gone more than a decade without publishing audited accounts by 2024. He argued that the bank’s turnaround was not driven by a capital injection alone but by governance discipline restored before new funds arrived in 2025/2026, a point he said carries lessons for other struggling state enterprises. Bagbin warned that eroding public confidence in state institutions, more than any single election or party, poses the deepest threat to Ghana’s democracy. The Speaker closed by urging Ghanaians, and especially young public servants, to read the book, calling it a rare account of transparent leadership in the public sector. He also commended NIB’s board, management, and staff for the institution’s recovery, and expressed confidence that President John Mahama’s leadership would extend similar gains to the country as a whole. The book chronicles Zakaria’s path from a humble upbringing to building a business portfolio spanning hospitality, consulting, and healthcare, including Tamale’s Aisha Hospital, before his tenure at NIB.
