The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has called for a mixed market economic policy to help address the country’s high cost of living and improve the standard of living of citizens. He made the call on the floor of the House, urging policymakers to review the country’s current free market economic system. Hon. Amoah explained that while the free market economy promotes private sector participation, it also encourages monopolies, oligopolies and cartels, which can drive up the prices of essential goods and place a heavy burden on consumers. He argued that a mixed market economy would combine government regulation with private sector participation to ensure fair pricing, reduce economic disparities and improve access to essential goods and services. He further proposed that the relevant parliamentary committees examine the framework and recommend appropriate policy or legislative measures, including the introduction of price cap laws to protect consumers from excessive pricing. He added that such reforms would help strengthen Ghana’s economy and improve the welfare of citizens.
