Wednesday, 18th March, 2026

The Select Committee on Information and Communications held a one-day training with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to highlight how digital technology shapes power, scrutiny, and governance, while equipping members to stay updated and effective in their work. The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Abed-Nego Lamangin Bandim, Member of Parliament for Bunkpurugu, noted that about 15 bills from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation will require thorough consideration, making the training timely in strengthening members’ ability to effectively scrutinize legislation. During the session, Prof. Ramesh Srinivasan from UCLA’s Department of Information emphasized that technology is not just a tool but something that interacts with society and can significantly improve the Committee’s productivity. He further explained the importance of understanding how technology works within society, adding that Africa, particularly Ghana, has the potential to lead in digital innovation. He concluded by stressing that technology and artificial intelligence should serve as tools for engagement that support human work, rather than replace or mimic it.
