EDUCATION MINISTER ADMITS FREE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGES

The Minister for Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has admitted that the Free Senior High School programme which was recently introduced has its challenge. These include lack of furniture, class rooms and dormitories for those in first years. He said, that despite all these challenges, it is worth it because parents who could not afford to pay their wards’ school fees can now send their wards to school.

The Minister was answering a question by the Member of Parliament for Akatsi North, Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, who wanted to know the details of the free SHS programme which began in September, 2017.

The Minister added that though there are challenges, the government is working hard to correct all the challenges. In a related development, Hon. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh has revealed that the eighty percent funding of free SHS will be transferred to the various Second-cycle Institutions soon. Disbursement of funds will be wired directly to designated bank accounts of schools based on validated school list and submission of expenditure returns.
