Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Stephen Twigg, has indicated that the CPA’s recommended benchmarks for democratic legislatures have proven to be very powerful tools in assisting Commonwealth parliaments to improve their practices and share the best of democracy and good governance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 66th Commonwealth Parliament Conference in Accra, he said the CPA aspires to embody and implement the values set out in the Commonwealth Charter.

“Last week I was very pleased to represent the CPA in New York at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit on where we launched our new Online courses on the crucial role of parliaments and MPs in the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 towards the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

According to him, the CPA wants to support one of these goals, SDG4, which is about access to quality education for all.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity this morning to give some examples of this,” he stated.

“Two years ago, he said “we launched our online CPA Parliamentary Academy and almost 1,500 (both parliamentarians and parliamentary staff) have signed up for courses”.
